Why visit Zaozhuang?

Zaozhuang (枣庄 Zǎozhuāng) is a prefecture-level city in southern Shandong Province, China. Often nicknamed "Coal City" (煤城) for its long coal-mining heritage, Zaozhuang has reinvented itself as a destination for wartime history and canal-era culture. It is best known for two historical episodes: the fierce 1938 Battle of Taierzhuang — one of the first major Chinese victories against Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War — and the Railway Guerrillas, a resistance unit that disrupted Japanese supply lines along the Beijing–Shanghai railway. These stories have given the city a distinct patriotic-tourism identity, anchored by the superbly rebuilt Taierzhuang Ancient City and several dedicated memorial parks and museums.

The city sits on the Grand Canal (京杭大运河) and beside Weishan Lake, giving it a water-town character unusual for inland Shandong. Administratively, Zaozhuang comprises five urban districts (Shizhong, Xuecheng, Tai'erzhuang, Shanting, Yicheng) and the county-level city of Tengzhou. Shizhong is the political and commercial core; Xuecheng hosts the main high-speed rail station; Taierzhuang District is the main tourist draw; and Shanting District offers forested mountain scenery.

Zaozhuang has a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are hot and humid, with July average highs around 32 °C and heavy rainfall. Winters (December–February) are cold and dry, with January average lows around −3 °C. Spring and autumn are short but pleasant and are the best times to visit.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Jining Da'an Airport (JNG) in Yanzhou District, about 90 km from central Zaozhuang. It offers domestic flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and other cities. Linyi Shubuling Airport (LYI) is another option, roughly 130 km east. From either airport, travellers can reach Zaozhuang by long-distance bus or by taxi.

By Train

Zaozhuang is on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed rail line, making it easy to reach from both directions.

  • Zaozhuang Station (枣庄站) — The main high-speed station, located in Xuecheng District. G-series trains take about 2.5 hours from Beijing and 3 hours from Shanghai. A BRT bus connects the station directly to the city centre and to Taierzhuang Ancient City. You can enter and exit with your ID card (no printed ticket needed).
  • Tengzhou East Station (滕州东站) — Also on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line, serving the northern part of the prefecture. Convenient for reaching Tengzhou and Weishan Lake attractions.

Overnight sleeper trains on the conventional Beijing–Shanghai line also stop at stations in the area, though high-speed rail is generally faster and more comfortable.

By Car / Road

Zaozhuang is connected to the G3 Beijing–Taipei Expressway and the G1511 Rizhao–Lankao Expressway. Driving distances: about 250 km (2.5–3 hours) from Jinan, 650 km (6–7 hours) from Beijing, 700 km (7 hours) from Shanghai, and 200 km (2 hours) from Xuzhou. Long-distance buses connect Zaozhuang with Jinan, Qingdao, and other Shandong cities. The main bus station is in Shizhong District.

Zaozhuang has a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that is the backbone of public transport, with bilingual (Chinese–English) route displays and stop announcements. Fares are low (typically ¥2). BRT B1 runs from Zaozhuang Station to Taierzhuang via the Fengming Lake transfer station; Bus B10 connects Fengming Lake to Taierzhuang Ancient City.

Taxis are inexpensive by Chinese standards. Ride-hailing apps (Didi) work well. Shared bicycles and electric scooters are available throughout the urban areas. Shizhong District has narrower, older roads and can be congested during peak hours.

English is not widely spoken. It helps to have your destination written in Chinese characters to show drivers. Tourist attractions typically have bilingual signage.
