Why visit Nakhchivan?
Nakhchivan (also spelled Naxçıvan) is the capital and largest city of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan bordered by Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. The city is one of the oldest in the Caucasus, with a history stretching back over 3,000 years. It lies on the Nakhchivan River at about 900 m elevation, in a semiarid plain surrounded by mountains.
The city has a rich architectural heritage from the medieval period, including the mausoleums of Momine Khatun and Yusif ibn Kuseyir. The local economy is driven by trade, mining, and agriculture. Summers are very hot (30–38°C), winters cold (−5 to 5°C). Spring and autumn are the best times.
