Batabat

Batabat is a mountain lake and recreation area in Shahbuz District, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, located about 60 km northeast of Nakhchivan city in the Zangezur Mountains at approximately 2,000 m elevation. The area is popular for summer camping and winter skiing, with a small ski lift operating in the snowy months.

Summers are cool (14–22°C), winters very cold and snowy (−10 to 0°C). The best time for summer activities is June–September; for skiing, January–March.

Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ) about 60 km southwest.

By Car / Road

From Nakhchivan city, drive 60 km northeast via Shahbuz (1.5 hr). A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the mountain road. A taxi from Nakhchivan costs 30–45 AZN.

Walkable around the lake. A vehicle is needed for the wider area.

• Batabat Lake — A small alpine lake surrounded by grassy slopes and rocky peaks.

• Ski lift area — A basic ski lift operates in winter.

• Hiking around the lake — Easy walks on the meadows around the lake.

• Skiing (winter) — Basic ski facilities, suitable for beginners.

• Photography — The mountain scenery, especially at sunrise and sunset.

There are no restaurants at Batabat. Pack a picnic for the day.

Batabat has no shops. Bring all supplies from Nakhchivan (60 km southwest).
