Hirkan National Park

Lənkəran, Azerbaijan

Why visit Hirkan National Park?

Hirkan National Park (also spelled Hyrcan) is a protected area in Lənkəran District and Masallı District in southeastern Azerbaijan, encompassing a portion of the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests. These ancient forests date back 25 million years and survived the Ice Age, making them one of the most significant temperate forest ecosystems in the world. In 2023, the Hyrcanian Forests were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spanning parts of Azerbaijan and Iran.

The park covers approximately 404 km² of dense, humid forest with towering ironwood trees, Persian silk trees, and a dense understorey of ferns, mosses, and endemic plant species. The climate is humid subtropical: summers warm (22–30°C), winters mild (2–10°C), and rainfall abundant year-round (1,200–1,600 mm). The best time to visit is spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October).

What are the things to do?

  • Hyrcanian forest — The park's primary attraction: a dense, primeval forest of ironwood (Dəmirağacı), Persian silk tree, Caucasian elm, and oak. Some trees exceed 40 m in height.

  • Waterfalls — Several seasonal waterfalls within the park, most active in spring during snowmelt.

  • Endemic flora — Look for the Hyrcanian boxwood and other species found only in this ecosystem.

  • Wildlife — The park is home to Caspian tigers (extinct in the wild but possibly surviving in remote pockets), Persian leopards, brown bears, wolves, lynx, and the Caucasian deer. Bird species include the Caspian snowcock and white-tailed eagle. Sightings are rare due to the dense cover.

  • Hiking — The park has several trails ranging from 1–2 hr short walks to full-day treks. The most popular route follows the river valley into the forest interior.

  • Birdwatching — Over 100 bird species inhabit the park. Spring migration is particularly rewarding.

  • Photography — The misty, moss-draped forest creates a moody atmosphere unique in the Caucasus.

  • Picnicking — Designated picnic areas are available near the park entrance.
