Why visit Haftoni?

Haftoni is a village in Lənkəran District in southeastern Azerbaijan, located in the humid subtropical lowlands near the Caspian Sea coast. The area is known for its tea plantations, citrus orchards, and rice paddies — a green landscape quite different from the arid interior of the country. Haftoni lies about 10 km south of Lənkəran city, close to the Iranian border.

The climate is humid and warm year-round, with mild winters (2–8°C) and hot, humid summers (25–32°C). The rainy season runs from September to March. The best time to visit is spring (April–June) or early autumn (September–October).

How do you get there?

By Plane

Lənkəran International Airport (LLK) is about 15 km north of Haftoni, with flights from Baku and some regional destinations. A taxi from the airport costs 10–15 AZN.

By Train

The Baku–Astara railway line passes through Lənkəran District. Lənkəran railway station is about 12 km north, with regular trains to Baku (4 hr, 5–10 AZN) and regional services.

By Car / Road

Haftoni is 10 km south of Lənkəran city on the coastal highway (R28). From Baku, it is a 260 km drive south via the M3 and R28 (3.5 hr). Marshrutkas and buses run frequently from Baku's Göyçay bus station to Lənkəran (5 AZN, 4 hr); from Lənkəran a short marshrutka or taxi (5 AZN) reaches Haftoni.

Haftoni is a small village easily covered on foot. For exploring the wider district, marshrutkas run along the coastal highway.

What are the things to do?

  • Tea plantations — The surrounding hills are carpeted with neat rows of tea bushes. Several plantations offer walking access and photo opportunities.

  • Haftoni village mosque — A small local mosque serving the community, typical of the region's Islamic architecture.

  • Caspian Sea coast — The Caspian shoreline is about 5 km east, with sandy beaches and reed-fringed lagoons.

  • Tea farm visits — Local tea growers welcome visitors during the harvest season (May–September). Ask at the village.

  • Birdwatching — The nearby Caspian coast and lagoons attract waterfowl, especially during spring and autumn migration.

  • Swimming in the Caspian — The coast east of Haftoni has informal swimming spots.

  • Chaykhana (tea house) — Several informal tea houses in the village serve Azerbaijani tea, sweets, and light snacks. 1–3 AZN.
  • Aşxana (local canteens) — Simple eateries in Lənkəran city serve Lənkəran specialities: lavangi (stuffed chicken or fish), plov, and fresh salads. Mains 4–8 AZN.

Where to drink?

Azerbaijani çay (black tea) with jam is the drink of choice. Lənkəran is a tea-growing region, so the local brew is particularly fresh. Bottled water is recommended.

What should you buy?

Local tea is the obvious souvenir. Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, mandarins) are in season from November to February. Small village shops sell basics.
