Lənkəran

Lənkəran is a city in southern Azerbaijan, on the coast of the Caspian Sea at the foot of the Talysh Mountains. It is the capital of the Talysh region and one of Azerbaijan's most culturally distinctive cities, blending Azerbaijani and Talysh traditions in its food, music, and architecture. The city has a subtropical climate — the mildest and wettest in Azerbaijan — supporting tea plantations, citrus orchards, and rice paddies in the surrounding area.

Lənkəran's architecture reflects its layered history: a 18th-century fortress, Soviet-era apartment blocks, and modern construction coexist in a compact city centre. The waterfront promenade along the Caspian is the social hub, lined with tea houses, restaurants, and parks. The Talysh Mountains rise immediately to the west, creating a dramatic backdrop and a climate that is markedly different from the rest of Azerbaijan.

The city is the gateway to Hirkan National Park, a UNESCO-listed temperate rainforest that preserves some of the most biodiverse forest in the Caucasus.

March through June and September through November are ideal, with mild temperatures (15–25 °C) and manageable humidity. Summer (July–August) is hot and very humid (28–35 °C), with frequent thunderstorms. Winter (December–February) is mild (5–12 °C) but rainy. The tea harvest (October–November) is an interesting time to visit.

Lənkəran is 270 km south of Baku (3.5 hours) on the M3 highway. Regular buses and marshrutkas run to Baku. Lənkəran International Airport (LLK) handles limited domestic flights. The Baku–Astara railway passes through the city. Within the city, buses, taxis, and marshrutkas provide transport (0.30–0.50 AZN per ride). Taxis within the city cost 2–4 AZN.

Lənkəran's food is among the most distinctive in Azerbaijan. Ləvəngi (walnut-stuffed chicken or fish) is the signature dish. Tea grown locally is served fresh. Citrus fruits feature in desserts and drinks. Plov, dolma, and grilled fish from the Caspian are staples. The city's Talysh influence brings unique herb-heavy dishes and preparations. The bazaar sells local tea, citrus, rice, and spices. Meals cost 5–15 AZN.

Lənkəran is the cultural capital of the Talysh people, who have a distinct language, music, and dance tradition. Novruz is celebrated with local Talysh customs. The tea harvest season brings community events. The city's fortress and museum preserve its history.
