The Overview

Africa is the second-largest continent and arguably the most geographically dramatic, holding the Sahara, the Nile, the Great Rift Valley and the wildlife-rich savannahs that draw travellers from across the world. It is enormous — large enough to swallow much of the rest of the globe's landmass — and astonishingly diverse, from Mediterranean North Africa to the tropical heart of the Congo Basin and the temperate tip of the Cape. It is also where humanity began. For visitors, the headline draw is wildlife, but the continent rewards far beyond the safari: deserts, ancient cities, music, markets and coastlines that few outsiders ever reach.

Travel logistics vary widely by region, so trips are usually built around one or two zones rather than the whole continent. East and Southern Africa are the classic safari destinations, with established lodges and well-run national parks; North Africa offers desert, ruins and old medinas; West Africa is rich in culture and music. The best time depends on where you go, but the dry season is generally ideal for game viewing, as animals gather at water and the bush thins out. Distances are large and infrastructure uneven, so internal flights and guided overland routes are common, and itineraries are best customised with local operators.
