Overview

Sudan is a vast country in North Africa, the third-largest on the continent, stretching from the Sahara Desert in the north to the tropical forests of the south. Its history spans the ancient kingdoms of Nubia and Meroe, through the Ottoman-Egyptian period, Anglo-Egyptian condominium, and independence in 1956. The country is defined by the Nile River, flowing north through the entire country. Sudan offers extraordinary archaeological sites, including more pyramids than Egypt, the Red Sea's pristine coral reefs, and the cultural riches of its diverse peoples.

Geography & Climate

Sudan's geography ranges from the hyper-arid Sahara in the north, through the Sahelian belt, to savanna and forest in the south (now South Sudan). The Nile River and its tributaries are the dominant hydrological feature. The climate is tropical in the south and arid in the north. The rainy season varies by region.

When to Visit

November to February is the most comfortable period across the country. The Red Sea coast is pleasant year-round. Summer (March–October) is extremely hot, especially in the north.

Visa & Entry

Most nationalities require a visa obtained in advance from Sudanese embassies. A letter of invitation may be required. On arrival at Khartoum airport, some nationalities can obtain a tourist visa. Registration with the Aliens Department is required within three days of arrival.

Money & Costs

The currency is the Sudanese pound (SDG). ATMs are limited in Khartoum and rare elsewhere. Cash is king. Credit cards are accepted only at major hotels. Sudan is relatively affordable for budget travellers.

Getting In

Khartoum International Airport (KRT) is the main entry point with flights from Middle Eastern, African, and European hubs. Port Sudan Airport (PZU) handles some regional flights. The Wadi Halfa–Aswan ferry across Lake Nasser is the most reliable land border crossing from Egypt.

Getting Around

Domestic flights connect Khartoum to major cities. A railway operates between Khartoum, Atbara, and Port Sudan but is slow. Bush taxis and buses serve most routes. A 4×4 is essential for desert travel.

Culture & Etiquette

Sudan is predominantly Muslim and conservative. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Alcohol is prohibited. Greetings are formal and extended. Photography of military or government buildings is prohibited. The culture is a rich blend of Arab, Nubian, and African traditions.
