Sierra Leone, on the West Coast of Africa, is a country of stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality, still emerging as a tourist destination after its civil war ended in 2002. It boasts some of the best beaches in the world, lush rainforests, a rich cultural heritage, and the vibrant capital city of Freetown. The potential for tourism is vast but largely unrealised, making it an ideal destination for adventurous travellers seeking untouched landscapes and authentic experiences.
The country is rich in natural resources, from diamonds to timber, and its greatest asset is its welcoming, friendly populace. Sierra Leone is home to 16 different ethnic groups, creating a rich tapestry of languages and traditions. While the tourism infrastructure is still developing, the country offers a unique and rewarding experience for those willing to venture off the beaten path.
Geography & Climate
Sierra Leone has a coastal belt of mangrove swamps approximately 402 km (250 mi) long, backed by wooded hill country, an upland plateau, and mountains in the east. The highest point is Loma Mansa (Mount Bintumani) at 1,948 m, the highest peak between Morocco and Cameroon. The Freetown Peninsula is mountainous, rising to about 1,000 m, with a dense tropical forest interior.
The climate is tropical, typified by warm temperatures and high humidity. Night-time temperatures rarely drop below 24 °C and daytime temperatures reach 30 °C throughout the year. From October to March the weather is generally dry with many fine, hot, sunny days. From April to September is the rainy season, with rainfall peaking in July and August.

WhatsAppWhen to Visit
The best time to visit Sierra Leone is during the dry season from October to March, when the weather is generally sunny and dry across the country. This period offers the best conditions for beach activities, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The shoulder months of April and November can be transitional, with some rain but fewer crowds. The rainy season from May to September brings heavy downpours, particularly in July and August, making some roads impassable and limiting access to certain areas.
Visa & Entry
Everyone entering Sierra Leone must have a valid passport. Citizens of ECOWAS member states do not require a visa. All other nationalities will require a visa, which can be obtained online via www.evisa.sl, at Sierra Leone overseas missions, or at air and land borders. For non-AU countries, a single-entry visa costs approximately US$80. Visa prices vary at embassies and consulates, so contact the relevant mission for current rates. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for most nationalities.

WhatsAppMoney & Costs
The currency is the Sierra Leonean Leone (SLE). ATMs are available in Freetown and major towns, though fewer in rural areas. Credit cards are accepted only at major hotels and some restaurants in the capital; most transactions are cash-based. Typical daily budgets: budget travellers around US$30–50, mid-range US$60–120, and luxury US$150+. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory.
Getting In
The main international airport is Lungi International Airport (IATA: FNA), across the estuary from Freetown. A new modern terminal opened in 2023. An airport security fee of US$25 needs to be paid on arrival and departure. Airlines serving Lungi include Brussels Airlines (Brussels), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa), Royal Air Maroc (Casablanca), Kenya Airways (Nairobi), and ASKY Airlines. Air Sierra Leone operates flights to London Gatwick.
Transport from the airport to Freetown is primarily by water taxi (Sea Coach Express or Sea Bird Express, about US$50 single), car ferries from Tagrin to Kissy Ferry Terminal, or local speedboats and "pampa" boats (US$0.50–1.25). By road, the journey takes five hours or more via Port Loko. Land borders with Guinea and Liberia are open, with vehicle permits required for private cars.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The road network has improved substantially since the civil war, with most major trunk roads tarred to a good standard. The Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority operates buses linking major cities. Minibuses called poda poda are the most common form of public transport, run by private individuals. Fares are inexpensive (Le2,500–5,000, around US$0.50–1). Taxis are widely available in Freetown and larger towns; agree on the fare before starting the journey. Domestic flights are not regularly available. The defunct railway is no longer operational.
Culture & Etiquette
Sierra Leoneans are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Greetings are important — a handshake and a smile go a long way. English is the official language, but Krio is the lingua franca. In the provinces, Mende is spoken in the south and Temne in the north. Dress modestly, especially outside Freetown, covering shoulders and knees. Ask permission before taking photographs of people. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for good service.

WhatsAppSafety
Sierra Leone is generally safe for travellers, but petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas and on poda poda buses. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Health considerations: Yellow Fever vaccination is required. Malaria is prevalent, so prophylaxis, insect repellent, and mosquito nets are essential. Tap water is not safe to drink. The 2014 Ebola outbreak is over, but basic hygiene precautions are advisable. Road safety is a concern, especially on intercity routes.
