Malawi, known as the "Warm Heart of Africa," is a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa whose eastern border mostly follows Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake on the continent. The country is renowned for the friendliness of its people, stunning lake beaches, diverse wildlife, and dramatic highland scenery. From the peaks of Mount Mulanje to the vast Nyika Plateau, Malawi offers authentic African experiences away from mass tourism.
The country is divided into three regions — Northern, Central, and Southern Malawi — each with distinct landscapes and attractions. Lake Malawi National Park, Liwonde National Park, and Majete Wildlife Reserve showcase the country's rich biodiversity. With excellent road infrastructure compared to neighbours, Malawi is easy to navigate and rewarding for travellers seeking genuine cultural encounters and natural beauty.
Geography & Climate
Malawi is part of the Great Rift Valley, with Lake Malawi filling the valley floor. The lake runs for about 580 km along the eastern border, occupying a fifth of the country's area. Much of Malawi is plateau at 1,000–1,500 m elevation, creating moderate temperatures in the highlands. The highest point is Mount Mulanje (3,002 m), the highest peak south of Kilimanjaro.
The climate is subtropical. The rainy season runs from November to April. The coolest months are May to July (winter). The hottest region is the lower Shire River Valley south of Blantyre.

WhatsAppWhen to Visit
The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry winter months from May to October, when animals gather around water sources. The lake is most pleasant from August to December. The rainy season (November to April) is best for birdwatching and lush landscapes but some roads become difficult.
Visa & Entry
Nationals of many Commonwealth and several other countries do not require a visa for up to 90 days. Citizens of most other countries can obtain a US$50 visa on arrival or via the e-visa system. Citizens of certain countries (including Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey) must obtain a visa in advance. A six-month multiple-entry visa costs US$150, and a twelve-month version costs US$250.
