Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is a compact, landlocked East African country that punches well above its weight as a travel destination. The rolling green highlands, volcanic peaks, and ancient rainforests make it one of Africa's most beautiful and accessible countries. Rwanda is best known for mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, but also offers savannah wildlife in Akagera National Park, chimpanzee tracking and canopy walks in Nyungwe National Park, and a vibrant, clean capital in Kigali. Since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda has rebuilt itself into one of Africa's safest, most organised, and fastest-growing nations — often called the "Singapore of Africa."
Geography & Climate
Rwanda's landscape is dominated by rolling green hills in the central plateau, volcanic mountains in the northwest (including the Virunga range), and Lake Kivu along the western border. The east is lower-lying savannah, part of the Akagera basin. Despite being two degrees south of the equator, Rwanda's high elevation (1,000–4,500 m) makes the climate temperate. Average daily temperatures near Lake Kivu (1,463 m elevation) are about 22.8°C. Two rainy seasons (February–May and September–December) bring heavy daily downpours, while the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer sunnier weather.

WhatsAppWhen to Visit
The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are best for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and game drives in Akagera. The long rains (March–May) make trails slippery but the landscape is at its greenest. Gorilla permits are more available in the wet seasons. Kwita Izina (the gorilla-naming ceremony) takes place in September. Genocide Memorial Week runs from 7 April.
Visa & Entry
Most African nationalities get a visa on arrival for US$30–50 (single-entry, 30 days). The East African Tourist Visa (US$100) covers Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda for 90 days. Citizens of a few countries (including the US, UK, Canada, and Schengen states) can enter visa-free for up to 90 days from 2025. E-visas are available online through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration. All visitors need a passport valid for at least six months.

WhatsAppMoney & Costs
The currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). US dollars are widely accepted at hotels and for gorilla permits. Budget travellers can manage on US$30–50/day, mid-range US$80–150/day, and luxury US$250+/day (excluding gorilla permits, which cost US$1,500 in the high season). ATMs are widely available in Kigali and major towns. Credit cards are accepted at upscale hotels and restaurants in Kigali.
Getting In
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the main gateway, with direct flights from London (British Airways), Brussels (RwandAir), Amsterdam (KLM), Paris, Istanbul, Doha, and Dubai. Regional flights connect to Nairobi, Entebbe, Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, and Johannesburg. Bugesera International Airport is under construction south of Kigali, expected to open by 2028. Major land border crossings include Gatuna (Uganda), Rusumo (Tanzania), Akanyaru (Burundi), and Rubavu/Goma (DRC).

WhatsAppGetting Around
Rwanda has excellent paved roads connecting all major towns. Buses and matatus are the main public transport, with frequent services from Kigali to Musanze, Butare, Kibuye, Gisenyi, and Cyangugi. Car hire with a driver is affordable and recommended for flexibility. Motorcycle-taxis (motos) are ubiquitous for short trips. Driving is on the right; speed limits are strictly enforced with frequent police checkpoints. Domestic flights are limited.
Culture & Etiquette
Rwandans are formal and polite. Greet with a handshake and "Muraho" (hello). Dress modestly, especially outside Kigali. The concept of "ubuntu" (community and mutual respect) is central. Umuganda (community work) happens on the last Saturday of every month. Photography of government buildings, military sites, and genocide memorial interiors is restricted — always ask permission. Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated.

WhatsAppSafety
Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching) occurs in busy markets and bus stations. Police checkpoints are common on roads. The border with the DRC is stable but check current travel advice. Mandatory vaccinations include yellow fever. Malaria is present throughout the country; prophylaxis is recommended. Tap water is not safe to drink.
