Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha form one of the most remote inhabited territories on Earth, a British Overseas Territory scattered across the South Atlantic Ocean. Saint Helena Island itself is famously known as the place of Napoleon's exile, while Ascension Island serves as a strategic military and communications hub, and Tristan da Cunha is the most remote permanently inhabited archipelago in the world. The territory suits travellers seeking absolute isolation, raw volcanic landscapes, endemic wildlife, and a pace of life untouched by mass tourism.
Each of the three components is a distinct destination. Saint Helena offers colonial history, dramatic hiking trails, and a warm, welcoming community. Ascension Island is a lunar volcanic landscape with world-class sport fishing and sea turtle nesting sites. Tristan da Cunha promises the ultimate off-grid experience with a small farming community and sub-Antarctic wilderness. The entire territory is reached by a small number of scheduled flights and cargo vessels, making every journey here an adventure in itself.
Geography & Climate
The territory spans three widely separated island groups. Saint Helena Island (122 km²) is a rugged, mountainous volcanic outcrop with cliffs rising dramatically from the Atlantic; its interior is a patchwork of pastureland, woodland, and eroded volcanic ridges. Ascension Island (88 km²) is a drier, more recently active volcanic island dominated by lava flows, cinder cones, and the lush green peak of Green Mountain. Tristan da Cunha (207 km² for the main island) is a volcanic cone rising to Queen Mary's Peak, surrounded by smaller uninhabited islands and famous for its rolling pastures and sub-Antarctic climate.
The climate is subtropical to temperate. Saint Helena has mild temperatures year-round (15–28°C) with a wet season from December to April. Ascension Island is drier and warmer, with minimal rainfall except on Green Mountain. Tristan da Cunha has a cool, wet, and windy oceanic climate where rain is frequent year-round.

WhatsAppWhen to Visit
The best time to visit Saint Helena is from December to April, when the weather is warmest and the sea is calmest for boat access. Ascension Island is visitable year-round, though December to May offers the best fishing conditions. Tristan da Cunha receives most visiting ships from October to April, which is also the mildest period for weather. The territory has no distinct peak tourist season given the limited visitor numbers, but flights and berths on supply ships should be booked well in advance.
Visa & Entry
All visitors to Saint Helena require prior authorisation. Most nationalities can obtain an entry permit online before travel; a valid passport (with at least 6 months' validity) and proof of return or onward travel are required. Ascension Island has a separate entry permit system managed by the Ascension Island Government, often requiring a sponsor and proof of accommodation. Tristan da Cunha has its own strict permission process since accommodation is limited and managed by the Island Council. All visa and permit details are subject to change — travellers must verify current requirements with the relevant authorities before booking.

WhatsAppMoney & Costs
The Saint Helena Pound (SHP) is the local currency, pegged at par with the British pound sterling. GBP is widely accepted, and card payments are becoming more common in hotels and larger shops on Saint Helena, though cash is still necessary for smaller purchases. Ascension Island uses the Saint Helena Pound and GBP interchangeably. Tristan da Cunha runs on a cash basis with limited facilities. Accommodation and flights are expensive due to the territory's remoteness, and most goods are imported, so daily costs are higher than in mainland UK.
Getting In
Saint Helena is served by Saint Helena Airport (HLE), with scheduled flights from Johannesburg (via Walvis Bay) operated by Airlink. Ascension Island is served by RAF Ascension Island (ASI) with limited passenger flights, primarily charters and military flights — civilian access is restricted and requires prior permission. Tristan da Cunha has no airport; access is by sea only, via scheduled cargo vessels from Cape Town or occasional expedition ships. Cruise ships also call at Saint Helena and Ascension Island on certain itineraries.

WhatsAppGetting Around
On Saint Helena, car hire and taxis are the most practical options; a limited public bus service runs between Jamestown and major settlements. Driving is on the left. Ascension Island has a small road network best explored with a hired vehicle. Tristan da Cunha is small enough to walk or cycle, with a handful of vehicles operated by local residents. Inter-island travel relies on the occasional supply vessel — there is no regular passenger service between the three components of the territory.
Culture & Etiquette
The culture is a blend of British, African, and Asian influences, particularly on Saint Helena where Saint Helenian identity is strong. English is universally spoken. People are friendly and reserved; a polite greeting goes a long way. Dress is casual, but modest attire is appreciated in formal settings and when visiting religious sites. Tipping is not expected but is appreciated for good service. Photography of military or communications infrastructure (especially on Ascension) may be restricted.

WhatsAppSafety
Saint Helena is a very safe destination with low crime rates. The main risks are natural: steep coastal cliffs, uneven hiking trails, and the sun at equatorial latitudes. Ascension Island has similar low crime levels; visitors must follow biosecurity protocols to protect the fragile ecosystem. Tristan da Cunha is extremely safe but subject to harsh weather, and hikers should be accompanied by a local guide. No special vaccinations are required, but medical facilities are basic on all islands — comprehensive travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.
