Overview

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,300 km off the coast of Africa. Known for its powdery white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and turquoise lagoons, it is one of Africa's most popular beach and honeymoon destinations. Beyond the shore, the island offers lush rainforests, dramatic waterfalls, mountain hikes, and a remarkably diverse multicultural society shaped by Indian, African, Chinese, and French influences. Mauritius suits everyone from luxury resort travellers and honeymooners to eco-adventurers and culture enthusiasts.

Geography & Climate

Mauritius consists of the main island plus the smaller Rodrigues Island, the Agalega Islands, and the Cargados Carajos shoals. The main island is of volcanic origin, rising from the ocean to a central plateau where the highest peak, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, reaches 828 m. The terrain ranges from sandy beaches along the coast to rolling hills, sugarcane fields, and remnants of native forests in the interior (Black River Gorges National Park). The climate is tropical: a warm, dry winter from May to November and a hot, humid summer from November to May. The southeast trade winds keep the east coast windier and wetter, while the west coast is generally hotter and drier.

When to Visit

The best weather is during the dry winter months of May to November, with temperatures of 22–28°C. Peak tourist season runs from October to December and again from February to April. The shoulder months (May–June and September–October) offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. The cyclone season runs from November to April, with the highest risk from late December to March. Major festivals include Diwali (October/November), the Chinese Spring Festival (January/February), and Maha Shivaratri (February/March), which draw many visitors.

Visa & Entry

Citizens of most OECD countries (Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, and many others) do not need a visa in advance. As of June 2023, all visitors must complete the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Form, providing accommodation and return ticket details. Travellers arriving from malaria-endemic countries may be screened. Visa-on-arrival is available for many nationalities. This is general guidance — always verify with the Passport and Immigration Office or your embassy.

Money & Costs

Currency: Mauritian Rupee (MUR). Daily budgets: budget travellers can manage on around MUR 1,500–2,500 (USD 35–55), mid-range travellers on MUR 4,000–8,000 (USD 90–180), and luxury travellers on MUR 15,000+ (USD 340+). ATMs are widely available in towns and at the airport. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, mid-range restaurants, and larger shops, but smaller eateries and market stalls expect cash. A 10% service charge is often added to restaurant bills; if not, a small tip of 5–10% is appreciated.

Getting In

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) near Plaine Magnien is the sole international gateway, handling flights from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Major carriers include Air Mauritius, Emirates, British Airways, and Air France. There are no land borders. Cruise ships occasionally dock at Port Louis harbour, and there is a domestic ferry to Rodrigues Island operated by Mauritius Shipping Corporation.

Getting Around

The main airport is served by a highway network connecting Port Louis, the coastal towns, and the central plateau. Car rental is the most flexible option; driving is on the left. Intercity buses are cheap and frequent along major routes, but can be slow. Taxis are plentiful — agree on the fare before the ride. There is no passenger rail network. Domestic flights between Mauritius (MRU) and Rodrigues (RRG) are operated by Air Mauritius. Ride-hailing apps are available in Port Louis and tourist areas.

Culture & Etiquette

Mauritius is a multicultural mosaic: greetings are warm and typically include a handshake. When visiting Hindu temples, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders; for mosques, women should cover their heads. Swimwear is fine at the beach but not in towns or villages. Photography of people should be asked about first. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service (5–10% at restaurants). Public displays of affection are generally fine in tourist areas but more modest in rural settings.

Safety

Mauritius is one of the safest countries in Africa for travellers, with low violent crime rates. Petty theft and bag snatching can occur in busy markets (Port Louis, Flacq) and on beaches — keep valuables secure. The main natural hazards are tropical cyclones (November–April). Tap water is generally safe to drink in urban areas, but bottled water is widely consumed. No mandatory vaccinations, but hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. The sun is very strong — bring high-SPF sunscreen and a hat.
