Why visit Brunswick?

Brunswick is a picturesque town in the Greater Portland region of Maine, nestled into a crook of the Androscoggin River and surrounded by pine forests. Home to Bowdoin College, founded in 1794, the town has a rich intellectual and cultural heritage. It was here that Harriet Beecher Stowe penned "Uncle Tom's Cabin," a 19th-century clarion call for America's abolitionist movement. Today, Brunswick is known for its burgeoning food scene, with several talented chefs choosing to call this town of 22,000 (2020) home.

The town was first settled by the Abenaki people and occupied by English colonists in 1628 as Pejepscot, meaning "the long, rocky rapids part of the river." After periods of conflict and abandonment, the town was established by 1739. The Androscoggin River provided power for mills, and nearby forests supplied raw materials for textiles, furniture, and foodstuffs throughout the 19th century. Today, many old mills and sea captains' mansions have been repurposed into art galleries, restaurants, museums, inns, and boutiques.

Brunswick experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant, ideal for exploring the town's shops, restaurants, and nearby coastline. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, with beautiful views along the Androscoggin River. Winters bring cold temperatures and snow, while spring sees the river come back to life. The town is easily accessible from Portland (30 miles south) and serves as a gateway to the Mid Coast region.
