Eastern Uganda is a diverse and scenic region stretching from the shores of Lake Victoria to the slopes of Mount Elgon on the Kenya border. The region is dominated by the majestic Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano whose slopes are home to some of Uganda's most productive coffee farms. The source of the Nile River at Jinja is the region's most famous attraction, drawing adventure travellers for white-water rafting, kayaking, and bungee jumping.
The region is a cultural crossroads, with the Busoga, Bagisu, Iteso, and Karamojong peoples among the many ethnic groups. Eastern Uganda is also the agricultural heartland, producing coffee, cotton, sugarcane, maize, and rice. The landscape transitions from the lush, green shores of Lake Victoria in the south to the drier, semi-arid plains of Teso and Karamoja in the north-east.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry seasons (December–February and June–August) are the best times to visit Eastern Uganda. The Mount Elgon trekking season runs June–August and December–February. The rainy seasons (March–May and September–November) can make roads difficult, especially in the Mount Elgon area. The Imbalu (circumcision) ceremony of the Bagisu people takes place during even-numbered years around August–December.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Matatus and buses connect all major towns in Eastern Uganda. The main highway east from Kampala to Jinja, Mbale, and Tororo is paved and in good condition. Roads to more remote areas like Karamoja and Katakwi may be marram and challenging in the rainy season. Boda-bodas are the primary local transport in towns.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Eastern Uganda's cuisine reflects its agricultural diversity. Fish from Lake Kyoga and Lake Victoria features prominently, especially in Jinja and Mayuge. Matoke, posho (maize porridge), and millet bread are staples. The Bagisu people are known for malewa (bamboo shoots) and kamuli (a local vegetable). Eastern Uganda is also the heart of Uganda's coffee country, particularly the Bugisu Arabica grown on Mount Elgon's slopes.
What is the culture like?
The Imbalu (circumcision) ceremony of the Bagisu (on the slopes of Mount Elgon) is held every even-numbered year and is the region's most distinctive cultural event. The Busoga kingdom, one of Uganda's traditional kingdoms, has its headquarters in Jinja and holds annual cultural celebrations. The Teso people celebrate the Ateker cultural festival. The region also has a strong tradition of wrestling, particularly among the Iteso.
