About Mbale
Mbale is the main commercial and administrative centre of eastern Uganda, located at the foot of Mount Elgon approximately 220 km from Kampala. The town serves as the primary gateway to Mount Elgon National Park and the Bagisu cultural region. Mbale has a lively urban atmosphere with significant trade activity due to its proximity to the Kenya border at Malaba.
The Bagisu people, known for their Imbalu (circumcision) ceremony, are the dominant ethnic group. The fertile volcanic soils of the Mount Elgon slopes make Mbale a centre for coffee (famous Bugisu Arabica), banana, and vegetable production. The town's climate is mild due to its elevation.
