Kumi is the administrative and commercial centre of Kumi District in the Teso sub-region of eastern Uganda. Located approximately 40 km south of Soroti, the town is an important trading post for the surrounding agricultural areas. The Iteso people are the main ethnic group, and Ateso is widely spoken.

Kumi is a quiet, unassuming town that serves as a transport link between Mbale, Soroti, and the Karamoja region.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Soroti Airstrip (SRT IATA), about 40 km north.

By Train

There is no passenger train service to Kumi.

By Car / Road

Matatus from Mbale, Soroti, and Tororo serve Kumi. The journey from Mbale is 1.5 hours. Road conditions vary.

The town centre is walkable. Boda-bodas are available.
