Songea
Ruvuma, Tanzania
Why visit Songea?
Songea is the capital of Ruvuma Region and the largest town in southern Tanzania. It is historically significant as a centre of the Maji Maji Rebellion (1905–1907), when the Ngoni people under Chief Songea Mbano rose up against German colonial rule. Chief Songea was executed by the Germans, and the town bears his name.
Today Songea is a relaxed, laid-back town with a cool climate thanks to its elevation (~1,100 m). It serves as the commercial and administrative hub for the surrounding tobacco, coffee, and maize-growing areas. The town is compact and easy to navigate. The population includes many Ngoni people, whose traditions and dance are part of the local culture.
