Why visit?

Ruvuma is a region in southern Tanzania, named after the Ruvuma River that forms its border with Mozambique. It is the southernmost region of Tanzania, stretching from Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi) in the west to the Ruvuma River lowlands in the east. The regional capital is Songea, the largest town in the area.

The region is characterised by the highlands of the Livingstone Mountains along Lake Nyasa, the fertile plateaus around Songea, and the miombo woodlands of the eastern districts. Agriculture is the mainstay, with tobacco, maize, coffee, and cashew nuts as major cash crops. Ruvuma has a strong historical significance as the centre of the Maji Maji Rebellion (1905–1907) against German colonial rule.

For travellers, Ruvuma offers Lake Nyasa's beautiful shoreline, the Livingstone Mountains, traditional villages, and a route between Tanzania and Mozambique via the Unity Bridge. The region is less visited than northern Tanzania, offering an off-the-beaten-path experience.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season (June–October) is the best time for travel, with good road conditions and pleasant temperatures. The wet season (November–May) brings heavy rains, especially in the highlands, and can make roads difficult. Lake Nyasa is best visited in the dry season for swimming and boating.

How do you get around?

Songea is the main transport hub, with bus connections to Dar es Salaam, Iringa, Njombe, Masasi, and Mbinga. Buses and shared taxis connect smaller towns like Tunduru, Namtumbo, and Madaba. Roads are mostly paved in and around Songea but become unpaved in the eastern and southern districts. The trip from Songea to Mbamba Bay on Lake Nyasa is a scenic drive through the Livingstone Mountains.

Where should you go?

  • Songea — the regional capital, with a historic market, museum, and connections to the Maji Maji Rebellion.
  • Mbinga — a highland town near Lake Nyasa, known for coffee growing and mountain scenery.
  • Tunduru — a town in eastern Ruvuma, close to the Ruvuma River and Mozambique border.
  • Namtumbo — a district centre in north-eastern Ruvuma, on the road to Tunduru.
  • Madaba — a small town in the eastern lowlands, serving the surrounding agricultural area.
  • Mbamba Bay — a lakeside port on Lake Nyasa with beaches and boat connections to Malawi.

What should you eat?

Ruvuma's cuisine features freshwater fish from Lake Nyasa, particularly chambo (tilapia) and utaka (small sardines). The highlands around Mbinga produce excellent Arabica coffee. Ugali, rice, beans, and grilled meat are staples. Local markets sell bananas, avocados, and tropical fruits from the lakeshore.

What is the culture like?

The Ngoni people, descendants of the Zulu warrior migrations, are the dominant ethnic group around Songea, and their traditional dances and military history are a highlight. The Maji Maji Rebellion commemorations in Songea (July) include ceremonies and cultural performances. The region also has Yao, Mwera, and Matengo communities, each with distinct traditions. The Matengo are known for their unique ngolo terracing farming system on the hillsides around Mbinga.
