Mbamba Bay
Ruvuma, Tanzania
Why visit Mbamba Bay?
Mbamba Bay is a lakeside port town on the eastern shore of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi) in western Ruvuma Region. It is the main Tanzanian port on the lake, with ferry connections to Liuli, Itungi, and across to Malawi. The town sits at the foot of the Livingstone Mountains, offering spectacular scenery.
The economy is based on fishing and lake transport. Mbamba Bay has a relaxed atmosphere, with sandy beaches, clear water, and a backdrop of forested mountains. It is the most accessible Lake Nyasa destination in Tanzania and a peaceful retreat from the bustle of inland towns.
