Mbinga

Mbinga is a highland town in southern Ruvuma Region, situated at an elevation of about 1,200 m near the eastern shore of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi). It is the centre of Tanzania's coffee-growing industry, with the surrounding hillsides covered in smallholder coffee farms shaded by banana trees. The cool climate, green landscapes, and proximity to Lake Nyasa make it one of the more attractive towns in southern Tanzania.

The area is home to the Matengo people, who have developed a distinctive terracing farming system called ngolo, which prevents erosion on the steep hillsides. Mbinga has a relaxed atmosphere and basic amenities.

The nearest airport is Songea Airport (SGX), about 100 km north.

Mbinga is accessible by bus from Songea (about 2–3 hours south) and from Mbamba Bay. The road is winding through the Livingstone Mountains, offering scenic views. Buses run regularly from Songea.

Mbinga is small and walkable. Boda-bodas are the main local transport.

• Lake Nyasa — accessible from the lakeshore villages near Mbinga, with beautiful views over the clear waters.

• Coffee cooperatives — visit local coffee farms and cooperatives to see the coffee production process from cherry to bean.

• Matengo ngolo terraces — the traditional terracing system on the hillsides around Mbinga is a cultural landscape worth seeing.

• Coffee tour — visit a smallholder coffee farm to learn about Arabica coffee production.

• Hiking — walk through the coffee-growing hills and visit Matengo villages.

• Lake Nyasa excursion — day trip to the lakeshore for swimming and boat rides.

Local eateries serve Tanzanian staples: ugali, rice, beans, and grilled meat. Fresh fish from Lake Nyasa is available in lakeshore villages. The coffee is excellent.

Mbinga is famous for its Arabica coffee — try it at a local café or cooperative. Bottled water and soft drinks are available. Local bars serve Tanzanian beer.

Mbinga coffee is some of the best in Tanzania. Buy directly from cooperatives or at the local market. Fresh produce and crafts are also available.

• Mbamba Bay (west, ~2 hours) — lakeside port on Lake Nyasa.
• Lake Nyasa (south/west) — shore villages and beach access.
