Why visit?

Pingtung County (屏東縣) occupies the southern tip of Taiwan, the only county to reach the island's southernmost point. It is a long, varied territory: a fertile agricultural plain in the north and centre, a backbone of forested mountains along its eastern edge, and the Hengchun Peninsula tapering south between the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific. Pingtung City, the county seat, has a population of around 194,000 (2024) and a relaxed subtropical character — palm-lined streets, lively night markets, and numerous Buddhist temples — but it is not the county's main tourist draw.

That distinction belongs to the south. Kenting National Park, at the island's southern cape, is one of Taiwan's most popular holiday regions, famous for white-sand beaches, coral coastline, tropical forest, and a buzzy resort scene. Around it cluster the walled old town of Hengchun, the hot-spring valley of Sichongxi, and the offshore coral island of Liuqiu. The county also has a strong indigenous presence — Sandimen and the eastern mountain townships are heartlands of the Paiwan and Rukai peoples, with distinctive craft, architecture, and festival traditions.

Pingtung's geography gives it Taiwan's warmest, most tropical climate, and its blend of beaches, mountains, hot springs, indigenous culture, and an island make it a county best explored over several days, ideally with a vehicle. Nearby Kaohsiung, just across the county's northern boundary, often serves as the transport anchor and base for trips into Pingtung.

When is the best time to visit?

Pingtung is the warmest part of Taiwan, and its southern tropical climate makes it a year-round destination, though the seasons matter. October to April is the prime window: warm, drier, and pleasant, with the cool-but-mild winter making Kenting a popular escape from the chillier north. Spring brings the well-known Kenting outdoor music festivals, which draw large crowds around the Tomb-Sweeping holiday period.

Summer (June–September) is hot, humid, and the typhoon season — when storms can close Kenting's beaches and roughen the seas around Liuqiu, though calm spells still offer excellent swimming and diving. Donggang's Burning of the King Boat (Wang Yeh) festival is a major draw but is held only once every three years. The eastern mountains can be wet in summer; the hot springs of Sichongxi are most appealing in the cooler months.

How do you get around?

The county's spine for public transport is the Taiwan Railways (TRA) West Coast line, which serves Pingtung City and continues south through the plain; you can connect to it from the High Speed Rail at Zuoying in Kaohsiung. South of the rail network, Kenting and the Hengchun Peninsula are reached by bus — the Kenting Express and lines such as 9117, 9188, and 9189 run down the coast from Kaohsiung and the HSR station, taking roughly 2–2½ hours to Kenting. The Pingtung Bus Station in Pingtung City links the county to Taipei, Taoyuan, and other long-distance destinations.

Within the south, a rented scooter or car is by far the most practical way to explore — Kenting's beaches and viewpoints are spread out, and Hengchun is the favoured place to hire scooters at good rates. Liuqiu island is reached by ferry from Donggang and toured by scooter. Taxis are available at stations but there is no metro; most local life revolves around private cars, scooters, and bicycles.

Where should you go?

  • Pingtung City — The county seat; a workaday subtropical city of night markets, temples, and tree-lined streets, not a tourist hub but an authentic slice of southern Taiwan.
  • Kenting — The wider resort area at Taiwan's southern tip, fringed with beaches and a lively after-dark scene.
  • Kenting National Park — Taiwan's southern national park, prized for coral coastline, tropical forest, and dramatic geological landscapes.
  • Hengchun — A walled historic town and the gateway to the Hengchun Peninsula, best base for scooter rentals.
  • Donggang — A bustling fishing port famed for bluefin tuna and the once-every-three-years King Boat festival.
  • Liuqiu — A coral island off Donggang, known for green sea turtles, snorkelling, and an easy island loop.
  • Sandimen — A mountain township and a cultural heart of the Paiwan and Rukai indigenous peoples.
  • Sichongxi — A hot-spring resort valley near Kenting, good for a relaxing soak.

What should you eat?

Pingtung's food is southern, subtropical, and seafood-rich. Donggang is the standout: its harbour lands some of Taiwan's finest bluefin tuna, alongside sakura shrimp and oilfish roe — the "three treasures of Donggang" — and the town's seafood restaurants are a destination in themselves. Across the county, dining tends to be inexpensive and informal, built around noodle stands, bento shops, tea and juice stalls, and night markets.

Pingtung City's 70-year-old night market near the train station and the city's other markets — the Pingtung Night Market on Minzu Road, the Ruiguang Night Market, and the Central Traditional Market — are the places to graze on local snacks. The county's tropical climate also produces excellent fruit, especially mangoes, wax apples, and pineapples. Indigenous townships such as Sandimen serve distinctive mountain cuisine, including cinavu (millet-and-pork parcels wrapped in leaves) and dishes built around millet and wild greens. Vegetarians will find Buddhist-style vegetarian (素食) eateries near temples throughout the county, and Western chains appear in the larger towns.

What is the culture like?

Pingtung's cultural calendar is one of Taiwan's most colourful. The Donggang King Boat festival (Burning of the King Boat / Wang Yeh), held every three years, culminates in the dramatic dawn burning of an elaborately built wooden boat to drive away misfortune — one of the island's most spectacular folk-religious events. In the south, Kenting's spring music festivals fill the peninsula with crowds and outdoor stages.

Indigenous culture runs deep in the eastern mountains. The Paiwan and Rukai peoples around Sandimen and the highland townships are renowned for glass-bead craft, slate-built houses, intricate weaving, woodcarving, and harvest festivals. The county also preserves Han heritage in Pingtung City's 19th-century ancestral temples and academies, and Hakka traditions in its inland communities.
