About Pingtung City

Pingtung City (屏東市) is the county seat and largest city of Pingtung County, set on the fertile plain at Taiwan's southern end with a population of around 194,000. Once known by the indigenous-derived name Ahou (阿猴), the city grew under Qing and then Japanese rule into the commercial centre of the south's agricultural belt. Its character today is relaxed and distinctly southern Taiwanese: palm-lined streets, a warm subtropical pace, robust night markets, neon-lit shopfronts, and a striking density of Buddhist and Taoist temples.

Pingtung City is not a conventional tourist destination — it has no international-grade hotels and does not greatly cater to visitors — but that is precisely its appeal for travellers wanting an unvarnished slice of everyday southern Taiwan. People are friendly, life revolves around family and neighbourhood, and the city makes a comfortable overnight stop on the way south toward Kenting or a quick taste of local culture from nearby Kaohsiung. At its centre is Zhongshan Park, with a sports field, pond, fountains, and playground.

The climate is subtropical and warm year-round. October to April is the most pleasant time, drier and comfortably mild. Summer (June–September) is hot, humid, and the typhoon season. The city is compact and flat, easy to grasp: the train station and bus station anchor the centre, with the main night market, temples, and shopping a short distance away.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), roughly 25–30 km northwest of Pingtung City. From the airport, connect to the Kaohsiung KRT metro and on to the TRA railway, or take a taxi.

By Train

Pingtung City is easily reached by Taiwan Railways (TRA) train from Kaohsiung or Tainan on the West Coast line. To arrive via High Speed Rail, take the HSR to Zuoying in Kaohsiung and transfer to a TRA train.

  • Pingtung Railway Station (屏東車站) — The city's main station, connecting to the TRA West Coast line.
  • Guilai Railway Station (歸來車站) — A smaller local station on the Pingtung line.
  • Liukuaicuo Railway Station (六塊厝車站) — A newer local station on the Pingtung line.

Booking ahead is advisable for weekend travel.

By Car / Road

Most long-distance bus companies serve Pingtung City. You can reach it from Taipei or Taoyuan within a few hours — cheaper than the HSR and still comfortable, though usually with one transfer. The Pingtung Bus Station (屏東轉運站) is used by Pingtung Bus, UBus, and Kuo-Kuang Bus. By car, Pingtung City is a short drive from Kaohsiung across the county boundary.

Pingtung City's centre is flat and walkable, and the train and bus stations sit close to the main sights and markets. Taxis are readily available at the train station. City buses operate but coverage is limited; most residents get around by car, scooter, or bicycle, and a rented scooter is a practical choice for visitors wanting to range more widely. There is no metro. Standard ride-hailing apps used elsewhere in Taiwan generally work here too.

Food & Dining

Pingtung City has abundant dining, inexpensive by North American or European standards: sit-down restaurants, noodle stands, tea and juice shops, and night markets, plus shops specialising in cheap takeaway bento boxes. A few Western chains — McDonald's, KFC, Domino's — operate in the city. The night markets are the best place to sample southern Taiwanese street snacks, and the surrounding plain supplies excellent tropical fruit.

Vegetarian travellers will find Buddhist-style vegetarian (素食) eateries near the city's many temples.

Cafes & Nightlife

Tea and juice shops are everywhere, serving bubble tea and fresh tropical-fruit drinks — a natural fit for the subtropical climate. For nightlife, the city has a cluster of bars including the Steelskin Bar, the G.D. Pub, Duckie's, Jimmie's, and Hunters, which play a mix of Asian and Western music. As elsewhere in Taiwan, do not drink tap water straight — use bottled or boiled water.
