Pingtung, Taiwan

Why visit Kenting?

Kenting (墾丁) sits at the extreme southern tip of Taiwan, on the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County, and is the island's best-loved tropical beach destination. It is important to distinguish Kenting from Kenting National Park: Kenting is the wider area — a string of small townships, beaches, and resorts along the southern seaboard — while the national park is the protected landscape within it. The combination of white-sand bays, coral coastline, lush vegetation, and a lively after-dark scene draws holidaymakers from across Taiwan, especially escaping the cooler northern winters.

The peninsula is geologically and ecologically rich. Uplifted coral limestone has been weathered into caves, columns, and grottoes; tropical forest covers the hills; and the area attracts butterflies, Formosan macaques, and, each autumn and winter, large numbers of migratory raptors. Coastal landmarks range from the burning natural-gas vents of Chuhuo to the dramatic cliffs of Longpan Park and the sculpture marking Taiwan's southernmost point.

Kenting's climate is tropical and warm year-round, which makes it a popular winter getaway, but the seasons shape a visit. Cooler, drier months (roughly October–April) are the most comfortable, and spring brings Kenting's famous outdoor music festivals. Summer is hot and is the typhoon season — when rough waves can close all the beaches. Note that Kenting town shuts down surprisingly early for Taiwan, with most shops and stalls closing around 22:00.

How do you get there?

By Train

There is no railway to Kenting itself. The standard rail approach is the High Speed Rail (HSR) to Zuoying in Kaohsiung — about 90 minutes from Taipei. From Zuoying station, the Kenting Express (Line 88) bus runs to Kenting around the clock, so timing a return to catch an HSR train is easy. Reserve HSR tickets ahead for weekend travel, as trains often sell out. Many accommodations also run shuttle buses; taxis from Zuoying typically wait until full and then quote a per-person price.

By Car / Road

Long-distance buses link Kenting with the rest of Taiwan. UBus (United Bus) runs services from Taipei Bus Station toward the south for around NT$430; the journey can take 5–6 hours. From the Kaohsiung bus terminal, take line 9188 to Hengchun and Kenting — roughly NT$350 and about 2½ hours, with both regular and express services (the express arrives on the hour, though it can be hard to identify). Along the coast, buses 101, 9117, 9127, 9188, and 9189 connect Fangliao and Fangshan (transfer points from eastern Taiwan) to Hengchun and Kenting for NT$112–150. Ignore the inflated 3–5 hour bus times shown by some map apps for the coastal run — the buses move quickly. Renting a car gives flexibility for exploring the southern seaboard.

A rented scooter is the way to explore Kenting — the beaches and sights are spread far apart and a scooter unlocks the whole southern coast. It is usually cheaper and easier to rent in Hengchun, where 24-hour deals start around NT$300 and fuel-powered scooters (not just electric) are available even without an international licence. In Kenting itself, rentals run NT$500–800 per 24 hours, mostly electric scooters with an 80–100 km range that recharge free at the pickup station. Riders must show a Taiwan or international motorbike licence and sign a contract; helmets are legally required. Stand firm if a shop promises a cheap rate then tries to upsell you at a "real" station down the road. Pyng An Rent Car, by the fuel station at the entrance to Kenting, offers fuel scooters around NT$500/24 hr (sometimes bargainable to NT$450). Rental cars can be picked up at HSR Kaohsiung Zuoying station.

What are the things to do?

Coastal landmarks

  • Southernmost Point of Taiwan — A sculpture marking the island's southern tip; a favourite local photo and sunset spot. Carpark entrance about 200 m past the Eluanbi Lighthouse. No admission, parking NT$50.
  • Eluanbi Lighthouse (鵝鑾鼻燈塔) — The lighthouse is plain, but the surrounding park's easy seaside hiking trails make the trip worthwhile. Admission NT$40.
  • Longpan Park (龍磐公園) — A scenic stretch of green clifftop and coastline formed by the coast slumping and eroding in stages; arguably better than Maobitou.
  • Maobitou (貓鼻頭) — A black-cliff coastal area good for sunsets, with a rock said to resemble a crouching cat; the walkway is small and feels touristy. Parking NT$10–50, entry NT$30/15 full/concession.
  • Fongchueisha Dune (風吹沙) — A large, picturesque sand dune; you can walk down its right flank.
  • Chuhuo Eternal Fire (出火特別景觀區) — Natural gas seeping through porous rock burns continuously; six or seven vents can be lit, and sunset is the most atmospheric time to visit.
  • Chuanfan Rock / Sail Rock — A huge rock on a stony beach, a good photo subject.

Around Hengchun

  • Hengchun Town Wall — Pleasant for a stroll around the old town centre.

  • Hengchun South Gate — A palace-like gate standing in the middle of a roundabout.

  • Rocks Park (Hengchun) — A park of coral or volcanic rock formations.

  • Beaches — South Bay (南灣) on Nanwan Road is a fine beach for a swim, and White Sand Bay (白沙灣) is a more remote, beautiful stretch of sand.

  • Kenting National Forest Recreation Area (墾丁國家森林遊樂區) — A beautiful forest and jungle area with coral-limestone caves and grottoes; open 08:00–17:00, parking NT$20–50, entry NT$100/150 weekday/weekend. The extended walk to the "First Ravine" is the most rewarding part.

  • Sheding Natural Park (社頂自然公園) — A free trail of about 1½–2 hours through interesting gorges, with views toward the southern tip; a small parking fee applies.

  • Surfing — Surfing is increasingly popular; key spots are Nanwan, between Hengchun and Kenting, and Jialeshui on the east coast. Operators such as Afei Surf (No. 264 Nanwan Road) and FuDog Surfing run lessons, tours, and board rental, often in English.

  • Water sports — Jet skis can be rented at the busier beaches, generally around NT$1000 per 30 minutes at peak times; ask scooter-rental shops for better rates.

  • Music festivals — Kenting's spring outdoor music festivals are a major draw.

Where to eat?

Kenting's food scene is built around its night market and the seafood of the southern coast — fresh fish and shellfish, grilled-squid stalls, tropical fruit, and Taiwanese street snacks. The main Kenting strip turns into a bustling night-market food row in the evening, though remember the area closes early by Taiwanese standards, around 22:00. Hengchun town has a wider range of everyday restaurants and noodle shops.

Vegetarian options are limited along the resort strip; Buddhist-style vegetarian (素食) eateries can usually be found in Hengchun.

Where to drink?

Kenting's main strip has a busy bar and pub scene that runs alongside the night market, geared to the holiday crowd, with beachfront and street-side bars. Tropical-fruit juices and bubble tea are sold everywhere by day. Do not drink tap water straight; use bottled or boiled water.

Where to stay?

Kenting has a wide spread of accommodation, from backpacker hostels to beachfront resorts; Hengchun has cheaper guesthouses and is a good base if you are renting scooters there.

  • Budget: Balinese-style hostels run by Afei Surf — one in Nanwan, one in Jialeshui — suit budget and surf-minded travellers.
  • Mid-range / Upscale: A range of mid-range hotels and beachfront resorts lines the Kenting strip and the coast.

What should you buy?

Kenting is a holiday resort rather than a shopping destination; what there is concentrates along the main strip, where stalls sell beachwear, souvenirs, snacks, and tropical-fruit products. Hengchun's old town has more everyday markets and shops. Double-check prices, as in any tourist area; packaged goods are generally fixed-price, while informal bargaining is possible at stalls.

Where to go next?

  • Kenting National Park — Within Kenting itself; the protected forest, coral coast, and geological landscapes of the southern cape.
  • Hengchun — About 10 km / 20 min north; a walled historic town and the best place to rent scooters.
  • Sichongxi — Roughly 15–20 km / 30 min north; a hot-spring resort valley for a relaxing soak.
  • Donggang — Around 50 km / 1 hr north; a fishing port famed for bluefin tuna, with the ferry to Liuqiu.
  • Liuqiu — Via Donggang's ferry; a coral island known for sea turtles and snorkelling.
  • Kaohsiung — About 2–2½ hr north by bus; a major port city with metro, museums, and night markets.
