Hengchun

Pingtung, Taiwan

Why visit Hengchun?

Hengchun (恆春) is a walled historic town on the Hengchun Peninsula at the southern end of Pingtung County, the southernmost town of any size in Taiwan. Its name means "everlasting spring", a fair description of a place where the tropical climate stays warm and pleasant for much of the year. Hengchun is best known for one of Taiwan's most complete surviving Qing-dynasty walled towns: stretches of the old town wall and its monumental gates still stand, and the South Gate, set in the middle of a roundabout, has become the town's emblem.

While the resort strip of Kenting draws beachgoers, Hengchun has a more lived-in, everyday character — old streets, local markets, temples, and an unhurried small-town pace. It also serves as the practical hub of the peninsula: it has the best-value scooter rentals, the most regular bus connections, and a strong base of guesthouses, making it many travellers' choice for exploring Kenting National Park and the southern coast without the resort prices. The surrounding peninsula adds the constantly burning natural-gas vents of Chuhuo and parks of weathered coral and volcanic rock.

The climate is tropical. The cooler, drier months from roughly October to April are the most comfortable for visiting and exploring. Summer (June–September) is hot, humid, and the typhoon season, when storms can disrupt travel and close nearby beaches. The famous Hengchun Peninsula winds — the luoshanfeng, a strong autumn-to-winter downslope wind — are a notable local quirk and a recurring theme in the town's culture.

How do you get there?

By Train

There is no railway to Hengchun. The standard rail approach is the High Speed Rail (HSR) to Zuoying in Kaohsiung — about 90 minutes from Taipei — then a bus south. The Kenting Express (Line 88) and other coastal buses pass through Hengchun. Reserve HSR tickets ahead for weekend travel.

By Car / Road

Hengchun is well connected by bus. From the Kaohsiung bus terminal, line 9188 reaches Hengchun for about NT$350 in roughly 2½ hours, with regular and express services. Long-distance buses such as UBus run from Taipei toward the south. Along the coast, buses 101, 9117, 9127, 9188, and 9189 link Fangliao and Fangshan — transfer points from eastern Taiwan — to Hengchun for NT$112–150; the coastal run is quick despite inflated times shown by some map apps. By car, Hengchun is the gateway town on the road south into Kenting National Park.

Hengchun's old town centre is compact and walkable — the town wall, gates, temples, and markets are easily covered on foot. To explore the wider peninsula, a rented scooter is the standard choice, and Hengchun is the best place on the peninsula to hire one, with 24-hour deals from around NT$300 and fuel-powered scooters available even without an international licence; most rental shops cluster near the central bus stops. Riders need a valid licence and helmets are legally required. Be wary of a shop promising a cheap rate then directing you elsewhere to pay more. Taxis are available but there is no metro.

What are the things to do?

  • Hengchun Town Wall (恆春古城) — One of Taiwan's most complete surviving Qing-era walled towns; surviving wall sections and gates are pleasant to stroll around. The wall encircled the old town and remains its defining heritage feature.

  • Hengchun South Gate — A palace-like city gate standing in the middle of a roundabout, the town's most recognisable landmark; the East, West, and North Gates also survive.

  • Rocks Park / Houdongshan Park (后东山公园) — A town park of weathered coral or volcanic rock formations.

  • Chuhuo Eternal Fire (出火特別景觀區) — Near Hengchun, natural gas seeps through porous rock and burns continuously; six or seven vents can be lit, and sunset is the most atmospheric time to visit.

  • Walk the old town wall — Trace the surviving sections of the Qing-era wall and visit its gates for a sense of Hengchun's defensive past.

  • Use Hengchun as a base — From here, scooter trips reach Kenting National Park, the southern beaches, and the southernmost point of Taiwan.

  • Visit Chuhuo at dusk — Ride out to the eternal-flame field for the natural-gas vents, best seen as the light fades.

  • Explore the peninsula's coast — Day-trip to Longpan Park, Maobitou, and the beaches of the southern seaboard.

Where to eat?

Hengchun has a wider range of everyday dining than the Kenting resort strip — noodle shops, rice-and-meat eateries, bento takeaway shops, and night-market snacks — at lower prices. The peninsula is known for its onions, which feature in local dishes, and seafood from the southern coast is widely available.

Vegetarian travellers will find Buddhist-style vegetarian (素食) eateries in the town.

Where to drink?

Hengchun's drink culture is everyday Taiwanese — tea shops and stalls selling bubble tea and fresh tropical-fruit juices. For a livelier bar scene, the Kenting strip a short ride south is the place to go. Do not drink tap water straight; use bottled or boiled water.

Where to stay?

Hengchun is a popular base for budget and mid-range travellers, with a strong choice of guesthouses and small hotels that undercut the Kenting resorts while staying within easy reach of the national park.

What should you buy?

Hengchun's old town has everyday markets and shops more geared to local life than the souvenir stalls of the Kenting strip — fresh produce, snacks, and tropical-fruit products. The peninsula's onions are a noted local crop. Packaged goods are generally fixed-price; informal bargaining is possible at market stalls.

Where to go next?

  • Kenting — About 10 km / 20 min south; beaches, the night market, and the peninsula's resort strip.
  • Kenting National Park — Immediately south; tropical forest, coral coast, and the southern cape's landscapes.
  • Sichongxi — Roughly 10–15 km / 20–30 min north; a hot-spring resort valley for a relaxing soak.
  • Donggang — Around 40–50 km / 1 hr north; a fishing port famed for bluefin tuna, with the ferry to Liuqiu.
  • Liuqiu — Via Donggang's ferry; a coral island known for sea turtles and snorkelling.
  • Kaohsiung — About 2–2½ hr north by bus; a major port city with metro, museums, and night markets.
