Yehliu

New Taipei, Taiwan

Why visit Yehliu?

Yehliu (野柳) is a slender cape on the northern coast of New Taipei City, in Wanli District, jutting into the East China Sea. It is one of the most famous coastal landscapes in Taiwan, celebrated for the Yehliu Geopark — a narrow promontory of honeycombed sandstone where centuries of wind, wave and salt have sculpted the rock into a gallery of bizarre natural shapes: mushroom-stalked boulders, candle-shaped stones, ginger rocks and pitted "fairy footprints."

The cape's signature attraction is the Queen's Head, a slim-necked rock formation whose silhouette resembles a crowned woman in profile and which has become an emblem of Taiwan's natural heritage. The geopark also has a working fishing harbour at its base and a marine attraction, making Yehliu an easy and rewarding half-day trip from Taipei or a stop on a tour of the dramatic north coast.

Yehliu is small — a fishing village and the geopark cape — and is visited mainly for the geopark itself rather than as a base. The climate is humid subtropical: hot, wet summers (June–September) with a typhoon risk, mild and pleasant autumns and springs, and cool, windy winters. The exposed cape can be very hot and bright in summer and bracingly windy in winter, so bring sun protection or a windproof layer accordingly, and note that the rock surfaces can be slippery.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest international airport is Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), well over an hour away on the far side of Taipei. Visitors reach Yehliu via Taipei or Keelung.

By Car / Road

Yehliu lies on the northern coastal road and is most commonly reached by bus. Frequent buses run along the north coast linking Taipei, Tamsui, Keelung and Jinshan, stopping at Yehliu; from Taipei the trip takes roughly 1.5 hours and from Keelung around 30–40 minutes. By car, Yehliu is an easy drive along the coastal highway and is often combined with other north-coast sights such as Jinshan and the Yehliu–Jinshan stretch.

Yehliu is compact and entirely walkable. From the village it is a short stroll to the entrance of the Yehliu Geopark, and the geopark cape itself is explored on foot along marked paths; allow one to two hours to walk the promontory and see the main rock formations. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, as the rocky ground is uneven and can be slippery. There is no internal transport within the cape. Taxis can be hired in the village for onward trips along the coast.

What are the things to do?

  • Yehliu Geopark (野柳地質公園) — The headline attraction: a narrow sandstone cape covered with surreal eroded rock formations, including the famous mushroom rocks, candle rocks, ginger rocks and sea-pitted surfaces. Marked walking trails lead out along the promontory.

  • The Queen's Head (女王頭) — The geopark's iconic mushroom-rock formation, its slender neck resembling a crowned royal profile; the most photographed rock in Taiwan.

  • Other named formations — The Fairy Shoe, the Sea Candles and the Dragon Head rock are among the other distinctly shaped stones to spot along the cape.

  • Yehliu fishing harbour — A working harbour at the base of the cape, with fishing boats and seafood restaurants.

  • Walk the geopark cape — The essential Yehliu experience; follow the trails out along the promontory to see the rock formations and the Queen's Head.

  • Photograph the rock formations — Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light and smaller crowds; the Queen's Head often has a queue for photos.

  • Coastal walking and birdwatching — The cape and its surroundings are good for sea views and spotting coastal birds.

  • North coast day trip — Combine Yehliu with nearby Jinshan, Wanli and the wider north-coast scenery.

Where to eat?

Yehliu's food is centred on its fishing harbour, so seafood is the obvious choice — fresh fish, shellfish and squid served at harbourside restaurants in the village. Casual eateries and snack stalls near the geopark entrance serve simple Taiwanese dishes and street food.

Vegetarian options are limited at a seafood-focused destination; ask for "su shi" (素食) or plan to eat in Keelung or Taipei.

Where to drink?

Cafés and drink stalls near the geopark entrance and in the village sell Taiwanese tea, bubble tea and coffee. Tap water in Taiwan is generally not drunk unboiled; rely on bottled or boiled water. Yehliu is a daytime destination with no real nightlife.

Where to stay?

Yehliu is a small village and most visitors come on a day trip from Taipei or Keelung rather than staying overnight.

  • Budget / Mid-range: A small number of guesthouses and minsu (homestays) operate in Yehliu and the neighbouring north-coast villages.
  • Upscale / heritage: Yehliu does not have notable upscale accommodation; travellers seeking higher-end hotels generally stay in Taipei, or at hot-spring resorts in nearby Jinshan.

What should you buy?

The Yehliu village and geopark entrance area has shops and stalls selling souvenirs, dried seafood and local snacks. The most characteristic buys are dried and preserved seafood products from the fishing harbour. Prices are generally fixed; bargaining is not customary.

Where to go next?

  • Jinshan — A neighbouring north-coast district known for seafood, hot springs and the Ju Ming Museum, a short bus ride away.
  • Keelung — Taiwan's busy northern port city, around 30–40 minutes away, famous for its Miaokou Night Market.
  • Wanli — The district containing Yehliu, with beaches and paragliding nearby.
  • Tamsui — The historic riverside district reachable along the north coast, known for forts, temples and sunsets.
  • Jiufen — The lantern-lit former gold-mining town, reachable via Keelung or Ruifang.
