Banqiao
New Taipei, Taiwan
Why visit Banqiao?
Banqiao (板橋區), historically spelled Panchiao and sometimes written Banciao, is the administrative capital of New Taipei City and one of the most heavily urbanised districts in northern Taiwan. Although it carries the formal title of the region's seat of government and is home to gleaming high-rise developments around its rail hub, at heart Banqiao still feels like a busy local town threaded into the wider Taipei metropolis — a place of dense apartment blocks, riverside parks, old temples and a single great heritage attraction.
Banqiao's principal claim on the traveller's attention is the Lin Family Mansion and Garden, regarded as the most complete surviving example of traditional Qing-era Chinese garden architecture in Taiwan. Built up by the wealthy Lin family in the 19th century, it is a serene maze of pavilions, ponds and ornamental walls in the middle of the modern district. The newer New Banqiao district around the high-speed rail station, with its department stores, parks and civic buildings, shows the other face of the town.
Because Banqiao is so tightly connected to central Taipei — only a few minutes away by rail — it is best experienced as a half-day stop rather than a base. The climate is the same humid subtropical pattern as Taipei: hot, wet summers (June–September) with a typhoon risk, mild and pleasant autumns and springs, and cool, damp winters. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable times for wandering the parks and gardens.

By Plane
The nearest international gateway is Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), about 35–40 km southwest of Banqiao. CitiAir Bus Express route #1962 connects Taoyuan Airport directly with Tucheng and Banqiao, running roughly every 30 minutes during the day for around NT$135. Alternatively, take the Taoyuan Airport MRT into Taipei and transfer to the Taipei Metro for Banqiao. Songshan Airport (TSA), Taipei's domestic airport, is also a short metro ride away.
By Train
Banqiao is a major rail hub. HSR/TRA Banqiao Station (高鐵板橋站) at No. 7, Section 2, Xianmin Boulevard, brings together the Taiwan High Speed Rail, conventional TRA trains and the Taipei Metro under one roof. The high-speed rail puts the whole western corridor of Taiwan within easy reach; conventional TRA trains are slower but considerably cheaper. Book HSR tickets in advance for the best fares and reserved seats.
By Car / Road
Banqiao is woven into the freeway network around Taipei and is easily reached by road from across northern Taiwan; from central Taipei it is only a short drive across the river. Intercity buses use the terminal at Banqiao Station — the intercity bus terminal lies just east of the railway station and the local bus terminal to the west.
Banqiao is fully integrated into the Taipei transport system. The Taipei Metro serves the district on the Bannan (Blue) Line and the Circular Line, with several stations including Banqiao, Fuzhong and Jiangzicui. The EasyCard stored-value card works on metro, buses and trains. An extensive bus network, part of greater Taipei's, reaches every corner of the district. The central area around the station is easily walkable. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced, and ride-hailing via Uber operates in the area; note that many taxi drivers speak little English.

Banqiao's food scene runs from department store food courts to local restaurants and a bustling night market.
- Nanya Night Market (南雅夜市) — Open daily 15:00–01:00. The district's main night market and the best place for a wide spread of Taiwanese street snacks; budget.
- Andy Cuisine Restaurant (泰味廚房) — Huaxing Street No. 58. A well-regarded Thai restaurant with curries, grilled meats and salads; ask for "xiao la" (less spicy) if you prefer milder food. Mid-range. Branches also operate near Xinpu and Jiangzicui MRT stations.
Vegetarian food is easy to find across the district; look for "su shi" (素食) signs, common given Taiwan's strong Buddhist vegetarian tradition.
Where to drink?
Banqiao has the usual abundance of Taiwanese tea and bubble-tea shops, plus cafés in and around the station district. G+9 at No. 232, Guoguang Road (tel +886 2 2965 1900, open 09:30–23:00) serves fried chicken, ribs and craft beer. Hot Taiwanese tea and coffee are everywhere. Tap water is generally not drunk unboiled; rely on boiled or bottled water.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
Banqiao is one of the most urbanised parts of New Taipei but has no major chain hotels, and many visitors find it simpler to stay in central Taipei and visit Banqiao on a day trip, since the two are only minutes apart by metro. There are, however, smaller hotels and hostels offering good value.
- Budget: UZ Hostel (原宿時空膠囊旅館) — B1, No. 22, Lane 50, Section 1, Zhongshan Road; tel +886 2 6637 0603. A space-themed capsule hostel with separate male and female dorms and lockable capsules; roughly NT$599–1,400 per bunk. Within walking distance of Banqiao Station and the Lin Family Garden.
- Mid-range: Small independent hotels operate around the station area, often at lower prices than comparable Taipei hotels.
- Upscale / heritage: Banqiao has limited upscale accommodation; travellers seeking high-end hotels generally stay in central Taipei.
What should you buy?
The modern New Banqiao district around the station is the main shopping zone, with large department stores and shopping malls. For something more local, the Banqiao Flower Market (板橋花市) — open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00, set out under an elevated roadway — is a long market selling plants and gardening supplies. Department store prices are fixed; bargaining is not part of normal shopping etiquette in Taiwan.
Where to go next?
