Mbour

Thiès, Senegal

Why visit Mbour?

Mbour is a town on the Petite Côte of Senegal, about 80 km south of Dakar, and the gateway to the nearby Saly resort area. Originally a Serer fishing and farming settlement, it grew into a French colonial military and trading post in the early 19th century, developing around a titanium mine and the colonial peanut trade; it became the administrative capital of its sub-region in 1922 and was formally chartered as a town in 1926. Colonial-era warehouses, a church, and remnants of a historic wharf survive from that period. Today Mbour is Senegal's second-largest fishing port after Dakar, with its port handling a large share of the country's small-scale fishery landings and its fish market a hub of daily activity.
