Why visit Somone?

Somone (La Somone) is a small traditional fishing village on the Petite Côte, about 70 km south of Dakar and roughly 10 km south of Saly, reached via the well-paved N1 highway. It sits beside the Somone lagoon, a 700-hectare protected nature reserve formed where a river mouth is separated from the ocean by a sandbar. The lagoon draws numerous migratory bird species from Europe, including pelicans, herons, egrets, and pink flamingos. Unlike neighboring Saly, Somone has largely been passed over by mass tourism, and retains a quieter, more intimate character built around small-scale fishing.
