Popenguine

Popenguine (officially Popenguine-Ndayane) is a small coastal town on the Petite Côte, about 70 km south of Dakar, known for its cliffs overlooking the beach, the Popenguine Nature Reserve, and its Catholic sanctuary. The Natural Reserve of Popenguine, created in 1986, protects nearly 1,000 hectares of cliffs, savannah, baobabs, and forest, and is notable as the first reserve co-managed by Senegal's national parks service together with a local women's group; guided hikes there can encounter monkeys, monitor lizards, and dozens of bird species. The town is also home to the Marian sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrande, one of Senegal's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, drawing worshippers annually around Pentecost — a pilgrimage that has grown to attract close to 100,000 people a year, Catholic, Muslim, and secular visitors alike.
