Mboro

Thiès, Senegal

Why visit Mboro?

Mboro is a town in the Tivaouane department of the Thiès region, on Senegal's Niayes coastal belt about 117 km north of Dakar, with a population of roughly 41,000 as of the 2023 census. The town is built around large-scale phosphate mining — Industries Chimiques du Sénégal (ICS) operates a mine and processing plant here, the largest phosphate producer in the region, supported since 2016 by an on-site 20 MW power plant. Surrounding villages have raised concerns over the mining operations' environmental impact, including effects on local biodiversity and residents' health.
