Laoag
Ilocos (Region I), Philippines
Why visit Laoag?
Laoag is the capital of Ilocos Norte and the commercial hub of the northern Ilocos region. Its name comes from the Ilocano word "lawag" meaning "light" — a reference to the clarity of the morning light. The city is a charming mix of Spanish-colonial churches, art deco buildings, and modern commercial strips. Laoag serves as the gateway to the famous sand dunes of Paoay and the beaches of Pagudpud. Climate is tropical with a dry season November–April and a wet season May–October.

Laoag International Airport (LAO IATA) receives daily flights from Manila (1 hour, ₱2,500–4,000). Buses from Manila (Philtranco, Farinas, Partas) take 8–10 hours. By car, take the MacArthur Highway north from Manila via Tarlac, Dagupan, and San Fernando.
Tricycles are the main local transport (₱20–50 per trip). Jeepneys serve the city and nearby towns. Walking is feasible in the compact city centre around Rizal Street.
What are the things to do?
Laoag Cathedral (St. William's Cathedral) — A spectacular Italian Renaissance-style church built in 1612, with a leaning bell tower that has tilted from earthquakes. The bell tower stands 45 m tall and is separate from the church.
Sinking Bell Tower — The bell tower of the cathedral, sinking into the ground at a noticeable angle. One of the most photographed landmarks in the Ilocos region.
Malacañang of the North (Subec, Paoay) — The former presidential residence of Ferdinand Marcos, now a museum overlooking Paoay Lake. Entry ₱50.
Museo Ilocos Norte (Rizal Street) — A museum in an old Spanish-era building covering local history, artifacts, and Ilocano culture.
Visit the Laoag City Plaza — The central park, with a bandstand and gazebo. A popular evening hangout.
Take a tour of the tobacco plantations — Ilocos Norte is famous for its Virginia tobacco. Some farms welcome visitors.
Ride the Laoag–Paoay jeepney route — A scenic 20-minute ride through rice paddies and tobacco fields.
