Why visit San Juan?
San Juan is a coastal municipality in La Union, widely known as the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines" outside of Siargao. Its long stretch of beach — particularly the Urbiztondo and Barangay San Juan sections — offers consistent waves from October to March, attracting surfers from around the world. The town has a relaxed, backpacker vibe with a string of beachfront resorts, surf schools, and restaurants.

San Juan is 20 minutes north of San Fernando (La Union) by jeepney or bus. Buses from Manila (Partas, Dominion, Philippine Rabbit) stop at San Juan on the way north. By car, take the MacArthur Highway.
Tricycles and walking along the beach strip. The surf area is concentrated in a 2-km stretch accessible on foot.
What are the things to do?
San Juan Beach — The main surfing beach. The entire 5-km coastline is divided into surf spots. The central area has the most amenities.
Pindangan Ruins — The ruins of a Spanish-era church, destroyed by an 1892 earthquake. A historical marker on the site explains its significance.
Tangadan Falls (15 min inland) — A multi-tier waterfall surrounded by jungle. Entry ₱20.
Surf — Board rental ₱200–400 per hour. Surf lessons ₱500–1,000 per session. The best months are October–March when the waves are 1–3 m.
Stand-up paddleboarding — Available from several resorts.
Sunset bonfires on the beach — A common social activity.
