Why visit San Fernando?
San Fernando is the capital of La Union province and the gateway to the Ilocos region from the south. It is a coastal city on the South China Sea, known for its emerging surf scene, particularly at Urbiztondo and San Juan beaches. The city itself is a bustling provincial capital with a lively central market, Spanish-era churches, and a growing tourism infrastructure. San Fernando's population is about 125,000.

San Fernando is on the main Manila–Laoag bus route (Partas, Dominion, Philippine Rabbit — 5–6 hours from Manila). The nearest airport is Laoag (LAO IATA, 2 hours north). By car, take the MacArthur Highway north from Manila.
Tricycles and jeepneys serve the city. Jeepneys and minibuses connect San Fernando to nearby surfing beaches (San Juan, Urbiztondo) in 20–30 minutes.
What are the things to do?
Ma-Cho Temple (Ravelo Street) — A Taoist temple built by the local Chinese community, overlooking the sea. Free entry.
San Fernando Cathedral (St. William the Hermit Cathedral) — A neoclassical cathedral with a beautiful altar and stained-glass windows.
La Union Tourism Office and Museum — Small museum with local crafts and information about the province's attractions.
Pindangan Ruins — The ruins of a Spanish-era church in San Juan, destroyed by an earthquake in 1892.
Surf at San Juan Beach — World-class surfing waves from October to March. Board rental ₱200–400 per hour. Numerous surf schools offer lessons (₱500–1,000 per session).
Swim at Urbiztondo Beach — A gentler beach suitable for swimming, with resorts and restaurants.
Visit the La Union Botanical Garden (Cadaclan, San Fernando) — A 2-hectare garden with native plants, orchids, and a butterfly house.
