Nueva Germania
San Pedro, Paraguay
Why visit Nueva Germania?
Nueva Germania (New Germany) is a historic town in San Pedro department, founded in 1887 by German immigrants led by Bernhard Förster and his wife Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche (sister of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche). The colony was intended as an Aryan utopia but failed due to poor planning, disease, and isolation. Many settlers left, but a small community remained. Today Nueva Germania is a quiet agricultural town with a unique German-Paraguayan heritage, visible in some of the architecture, surnames, and a small museum. The climate is subtropical; best visited May–September.
