Belen
Concepción, Paraguay
Why visit Belen?
Belén is a small historic town in south-eastern Concepción department, about 30 km east of the departmental capital on a tributary of the Río Paraguay. Founded in 1767 as a Spanish mission settlement, it was one of several fortified towns established to protect the region from Portuguese incursions and hostile indigenous groups. The town's name means "Bethlehem" in Spanish, reflecting its religious founding. Today it is a quiet agricultural community with a historic church, a few colonial-era buildings, and sandy river beaches that attract day-trippers from Concepción during summer weekends. The climate is tropical, with the best visiting conditions from May to September.
