Sur
Janūb ash Sharqīyah, Oman
Why visit Sur?
Sur is a historic port city on Oman's southeastern coast, the capital of the Janub ash Sharqiyah region. For centuries it was a vital centre for dhow building and maritime trade with East Africa, India, and the Persian Gulf. Today it is best known as the gateway to the turtle nesting beaches at Ras Al Jinz, its working dhow shipyard, and its beautiful coastal setting where the Gulf of Oman meets the Arabian Sea. The city retains a relaxed, authentic character.
The climate is hot from May to September, with the monsoon (khareef) bringing cloud and occasional drizzle from June to August. The best time to visit is October to April. Sur is spread along the coast, with the old town and harbour at its heart.
