Izombe
Imo, Nigeria
Why visit Izombe?
Izombe is a town in the Njaba River basin, in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, about 30 km from Owerri. It is best known as an oil-producing area: exploration and production began in the early 1960s, and multinationals including Shell, ChevronTexaco (later Seplat, which acquired a 40% stake in the OML 53 licence from Chevron in 2015) and Addax Petroleum have operated the OML 53 and OML 124 licences that cover Izombe, together accounting for the large majority of oil produced from Oguta LGA. The Izombe Gas Processing Company was developed as an inland hub to process gas from these fields that would otherwise be flared.
