Oguta

Oguta is a lake town in Imo State, on the shores of Oguta Lake, the largest natural lake in the state and a roughly 8 km by 2.5 km body of water within the Niger Delta's equatorial rainforest belt. The lake's clear blue, non-saline water — free of crocodiles — has long made it a swimming and watersports destination. Colonial administrators used the lakeside as a retreat, and planning for a formal resort began in 1973; the resulting Oguta Lake Motel, a 60-room property with an 18-hole golf course on the bank of the lake, was commissioned in September 1977. During the Nigeria–Biafra civil war (1967–1970), Biafran forces built a bunker with a tunnel running beneath the lake connecting its two banks; the site is preserved today and remains a point of historical interest for visitors.

Oguta is reached by road from Owerri, the Imo State capital.
