Okigwe

Imo, Nigeria

Why visit Okigwe?

Okigwe is the third-largest city in Imo State after Owerri and Orlu, and the headquarters of Okigwe Local Government Area. In the pre-colonial era it was part of the Aro Confederacy, the powerful trading network that dominated much of southeastern Nigeria, and it developed in the traditional Igbo pattern as a cluster of farming villages. The city sits near the Port Harcourt–Enugu–Maiduguri rail corridor and close to the large cattle market in the Umunneochi area of neighbouring Abia State, which has made it a significant cattle transit town for the South-East and South-South. Okigwe was also a centre of nationalist activity in the run-up to Nigerian independence, producing prominent figures such as Mbonu Ojike. The town hosts a campus of Imo State University.
