Mbieri is the largest of the original nine towns of Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, itself created in 1989 under General Ibrahim Babangida. The town is named after one of the indigenous Igbo clans that historically expanded into parts of the old Owerri province, and today Mbieri comprises 19 constituent villages, including Achi, Amankuta, Amaulu, Awo, Ebom, Eziome, Obazu, Obokwe, Ohohia, Ubakuru, Umuagwu, Umuahii, Umudagu, Umuduru, Umunjam, Umuneke, Umuobom, Umuomumu and Umuonyeali.
