Why visit Birtamod?

Birtamod is a rapidly growing municipality in Jhapa District, eastern Nepal, situated along the Mahendra Highway just west of the Mechi River border with India. It has emerged as a major commercial centre in the eastern Terai, known for its bustling markets, educational institutions, and as a trading hub connecting Nepal to the Indian state of West Bengal and Bihar. Its proximity to the international border at Kakarbhitta drives much of its economic activity.

The climate is humid subtropical with hot summers (March–June), a monsoon season (June–September), and mild winters (October–February). The best time to visit is between October and March. The town stretches along the highway corridor with a lively central bazaar.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Bhadrapur Airport (BDP), also called Chandragadhi Airport, is 15 km south-east. A taxi from the airport costs around Rs 600–800.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Galgalia, Bihar (India), about 10 km south, with services to Siliguri and Katihar.

By Car / Road

Birtamod sits on the Mahendra Highway (NH-01). Buses connect it to Kathmandu (490 km, 10 hours, Rs 800–1800), Biratnagar (50 km, 1 hour, Rs 150–300), Kakarbhitta (15 km east, 30 minutes), and Damak (12 km west). The Kakarbhitta border crossing is the main overland entry point from India.

Rickshaws and tempos dominate local transport (Rs 20–50). The flat terrain is walkable for short distances. Taxis can be hired for longer trips.

  • Kakarbhitta Border Crossing – The busiest Nepal–India border post in eastern Nepal, a fascinating hub of trade and movement.
  • Arjundhara Dham – A revered Hindu temple complex said to be the site where Arjuna performed penance, about 8 km north.
  • Mechi River – The border river offering scenic banks and a glimpse of daily cross-border life.

Shop at the bustling border markets of Kakarbhitta. Visit the Arjundhara temple complex, particularly during the Shivaratri festival. Explore nearby tea gardens in the surrounding hills.
