Pakokku

Magway, Myanmar

Why visit Pakokku?

Pakokku is a historic river town in northwestern Magway Region, located on the Irrawaddy River about 60 km north of Magway city and 30 km south of Bagan. It is an important agricultural trading centre, known for its production of sesame, peanuts, tobacco, and cotton. Pakokku has a long history as a port town and was briefly the headquarters of the anti-colonial Myochit Party in the 1930s. It also has a significant Muslim population, giving it a distinctive cultural character compared to other towns in central Myanmar.

The climate is hot and dry, typical of central Myanmar's dry zone, with the cool season (November–February) being the best time to visit. The town has a busy riverside market and several notable religious sites.
