Yenangyaung
Magway, Myanmar
Why visit Yenangyaung?
Yenangyaung is a historic town in northwestern Magway Region, located near the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. It is the centre of Myanmar's traditional oil industry, with hand-dug oil wells that have been in operation since the 19th century. During the British colonial period, Yenangyaung was one of the most important oil fields in Asia, and the town still has a distinctive industrial landscape with wooden derricks, pipelines, and storage tanks dotting the surrounding hillsides.
The town is also known for the Battle of Yenangyaung in 1942, a World War II engagement between British, Indian, and Japanese forces. Today it is a quiet market town with a unique heritage that appeals to travellers interested in industrial history. The climate is extremely hot and dry, typical of central Myanmar's dry zone.
