Thayet
Magway, Myanmar
Why visit Thayet?
Thayet is a town in southern Magway Region, located on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. It is the administrative centre of Thayet District and was briefly the capital of British Burma between 1826 and 1852, giving it a minor historical significance. Today it is a quiet agricultural market town with a few surviving colonial-era buildings.
The climate is typical of central Myanmar's dry zone: very hot and dry, with summer temperatures exceeding 40°C. The cool season from November to February is the best time to visit. The town is compact and centred on the riverfront.
