Minbu

Minbu is a town in western Magway Region, located on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, directly opposite the town of Sagu. It is the administrative centre of Minbu District and an important agricultural market town in the dry zone. Minbu is known for its sesame, peanut, and bean production, as well as for being the gateway to the Chin Hills region. The town has a relaxed atmosphere and a scenic riverfront.

The climate is hot and dry, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in summer. The cool season from November to February is the best time to visit.

By Plane

Mandalay International Airport (MDL) is the nearest major airport, approximately 250 km east. A taxi costs around 90,000–110,000 kyat and takes 5–6 hours.

By Train

Minbu is not on a major railway line. The nearest station is in Magway (50 km south).

By Car / Road

Minbu is on the road between Magway (50 km south, 1 hr) and Pakokku (40 km north, 45 min). Buses and shared taxis run regularly.

The town is walkable. Motorcycle taxis are available.

• Shwezigon Pagoda (Minbu): A local pagoda with a golden stupa.

Small tea shops and restaurants serve Myanmar staples for 1,000–2,500 kyat.

Tea shops serve Myanmar milk tea. Bottled water is essential.

Sesame oil, peanut products, and local textiles are available. Bargaining is expected.

• Pakokku (40 km north, 45 min) — Historic Irrawaddy river town with a Muslim quarter.
• Bagan (70 km north, 1.5 hr) — The legendary temple plain.
