Buzi

Sofala, Mozambique

Why visit Buzi?

Buzi (known in colonial times as Nova Lusitânia) is a small town on the Buzi River in Sofala Province, southeast of Beira. It is a fishing and agricultural settlement in a fertile river valley, with an economy built on sugar production alongside rice and other farming. The town was devastated by Cyclone Idai in March 2019, when the swollen Buzi River flooded much of the town and put tens of thousands of residents at risk; a cholera outbreak followed in the storm's aftermath, one of the hardest-hit areas in Sofala Province.
