Marromeu

Marromeu is a town in the Zambezi River delta of Sofala Province, near the Marromeu Special Reserve, a roughly 1,500 km² protected area that forms part of the wider 11,000 km² Marromeu Complex covering the southern Zambezi delta and the adjacent Cheringoma escarpment — one of Africa's most important wetlands. The reserve was created to protect its buffalo population, historically estimated at around 55,000 in the 1970s and now recovered to more than 29,000. The town itself grew up around Sena Sugar, a colonial-era sugar estate, and remains a fishing and agricultural settlement in a landscape of channels, mangroves, and floodplains rich in birdlife.

The nearest airport is Beira Airport (BEW), about 200 km south.

By Train

There is no passenger rail service to Marromeu; travel is by road.

By Car / Road

Marromeu is reached via unpaved roads from Caia or Beira. A 4x4 is recommended.

Marromeu is walkable. Boat trips on the delta can be arranged.
