Dondo

Sofala, Mozambique

Why visit Dondo?

Dondo is an industrial town about 30 km northwest of Beira in Sofala Province, and functions as the operational hub of the Beira Corridor, the trade route linking landlocked Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi to the Indian Ocean. It sits at the point where the Sena Railway (to Malawi and Zambia) and the Machipanda line (to Zimbabwe) converge before the final stretch into the Port of Beira. The town hosts a major cement factory using limestone quarried from nearby Muanza district, as well as one of only two concrete-sleeper plants in Mozambique, which supplies the rehabilitation of the Machipanda railway.
