Balaclava

Balaclava is a coastal area on the northwest coast of Mauritius, named after the Crimean War battle of Balaclava (1854). It features a quiet, less-developed beach and the Balaclava Ruins — the atmospheric remains of a 19th-century sugar estate. The area offers a more tranquil alternative to the bustling resort strip further north.

Balaclava is 3 km south of Pointe aux Piments on the coastal road. Buses from Port Louis serve the area. A taxi from Port Louis costs around MUR 350.

The beach and ruins area are walkable. Buses and taxis connect to Port Louis and the northern beaches.

Small local shops sell basic provisions. For shopping, head to Grand Baie or Port Louis.

Port Louis (12 km south) — capital city with attractions including Caudan Waterfront. Pointe aux Piments (3 km north) — beach. Grand Baie (10 km north) — resort town with shopping and nightlife.
